Rising Flood Risk in Ambattur Ahead of Monsoon
Residents in Ambattur are bracing for potential flooding as heavy monsoon rains approach Chennai. Authorities are renewing focus on water retention work because existing stormwater drainage projects remain incomplete in key areas.

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is restoring eight major ponds in Ambattur — including Ayyan Kulam, Kalaivanar Nagar Pond, and Vairakulam — under the Singara Chennai initiative to increase local water storage and reduce runoff on roads. These efforts aim to hold millions of litres of rainwater and prevent flash flooding.

However, stormwater drain gaps in at least 38 spots across Chennai, including parts of Ambattur, continue to worry residents, as these unlinked drains can impede water flow and increase flood risk during intense rains.
