Rising Flood Risk in Ambattur Ahead of Monsoon Residents in Ambattur are bracing for potential flooding as heavy monsoon rains approach Chennai. Authorities are renewing focus on water retention work because existing stormwater drainage projects remain incomplete in key areas.The Times of India The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is restoring eight major ponds in Ambattur — including Ayyan Kulam, Kalaivanar Nagar Pond, and Vairakulam — under the Singara Chennai initiative to increase local water storage and reduce runoff on roads. These efforts aim to hold millions of litres of rainwater and prevent flash flooding.The Times of India However, stormwater drain gaps in at least 38 spots across Chennai, including parts of Ambattur, continue to worry residents, as these unlinked drains can impede water flow and increase flood risk during intense rains.

Even though the museum was opened at 10 a.m., the crowd started gathering at 9.30 a.m. itself and the 17-minute-long audio – visual show at the museum’s mini theatre set the right tone before getting immersed into the finer details of the museum, like iron smelting interactive board, pearl fishery etc.

Cyclone Ditwah Approaches Tamil Nadu

Cyclonic Storm Ditwah, presently 80 kms away from Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts, will weaken into a deep depression during next three hours over southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts. Presently the cyclonic storm has moved northwards and continues to move at a slow pace with the speed of 5 kmph during past 6 hours today. The cyclone is at about 90 km east-southeast of Cuddalore, 120 km northeast of Karaikal, 90 km east-southeast of Puducherry, 170 km north-northeast of Vedaranniyam and 150 km south-southeast of Chennai. The system will be centered over southwest Bay of Bengal within a minimum distance of 30 km from the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coastline by midnight of today.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Tuesday (December 23, 2025) wrote to Union External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, urging him to utilise appropriate diplomatic channels to convene a Joint Working Group meeting and hold fishermen-level talks to arrive at a permanent solution to the issues faced by Tamil Nadu’s fishermen.In his letter, Mr. Stalin drew Mr. Jaishankar’s attention to the arrest of 12 fishermen from Rameswaram and the seizure of their mechanised boat by the Sri Lankan Navy on Tuesday. “The continued arrest of our fishermen and the seizure of their boats by the Sri Lankan Navy have severely impacted their livelihoods and caused immense hardship and distress among the coastal fishing communities of Tamil Nadu,” Mr. Stalin said.
